Twenty Years of Baltimore-Area Design-Build Experience

Rick Byrd founded Byrd Design & Build in 2011 in the Baltimore area where he grew up. He studied architectural design at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), then spent six and a half years apprenticing under a general contractor and master plumber. That combination of design training and hands-on construction gave Rick a respect for both the vision behind a home and the craftsmanship required to bring it to life.

His work spans custom construction, remodeling, and historic restoration, with each discipline strengthening the others. Working within homes that have stood for decades or centuries demands patience, creativity, and problem-solving. Those lessons shape every project, helping the Byrd team preserve character, anticipate challenges, and make decisions that will serve a home well for years to come.

For homeowners, Rick’s experience means steady, personal guidance. He walks clients through materials and finishes, joins them at showrooms or specialty suppliers when helpful, and makes sure they never feel left to navigate decisions alone. His background as a builder, developer, and licensed Maryland real estate broker adds a broader perspective, but resale value is never the starting point. The goal is a home that reflects how the client lives, with character, craftsmanship, and attention to details others may overlook. Rick stays personally involved from the first conversation through the final details, building each project around trust, craftsmanship, and a genuine partnership with the homeowner.

A historic home renovation nestled between Roland Park and Guilford, two of Baltimore’s most architecturally rich neighborhoods. We added new indoor and outdoor living space designed to work with the home’s original architecture rather than against it, integrating a rear extension and refined outdoor entertaining area without disrupting the streetscape. A renovation that respects the home’s history while giving the family room to grow into it.

A waterfront home in Essex, Maryland, where we reworked the first floor into a single connected living space with clear sightlines to the water. A new custom kitchen anchors the main floor, opening directly into the dining and living areas for the way the family entertains. A full first-floor remodel built around the setting the home was built for.

A new custom beach house on the Delaware coast in Bethany Beach, Sussex County. Byrd Design and Build creates custom coastal homes throughout the area, including Bethany Beach and Rehoboth Beach. This home was built with eco-friendly systems and materials throughout, from energy-efficient design to sustainable interior selections. Expansive glass and integrated outdoor living allow the interior to flow naturally into the surrounding shoreline, creating a custom coastal home designed around the way the family lives with the water.

A modern take on a mid-century home in Pikesville, Maryland. We opened up the original floor plan for the way the family lives today while carefully preserving the architectural details that give the house its character, from period-appropriate millwork to the original built-ins. A design-forward restoration that honors the home’s mid-century roots and brings it fully into the present.
